Jane presented work from our GRABS project at the IMISCOE annual conference in Girona, 29 June – 3 July 2026
She presented papers in two panels:
- “Power, Positionality, and the Praxis of Community Engagement in Migration Research through an intersectional lens” organised by Lorena Izaguirre (CIRFASE, UCLouvain) & Andrea Souto (Lecturer, ESOMI, University A Coruña), with discussant Tanja Bastia (University of Manchester)
This panel session centred on applying an intersectional lens to researchers’ positionalities and reflexivity. It interrogated how this lens could be used as a methodological and ethical tool which drives migration scholars to remain faithful to intersectionality’s feminist and anti-racist principles in research, collaboration and dissemination. Jane presented a paper based on GRABS participative methods, asking how successfully these had been used to go beyond extractivism in research with young people in forced migration.
- “Intersectional and Multidimensional Approaches to Belonging in Migration Studies” organised by Sinem Yilmaz (Vrije Universiteit Brussels)
This panel explored how belonging is experienced, contested, and reimagined in the everyday lives of migrants, refugees, and post-migrant generations. Jane presented a paper on belonging and non-belonging in the lives of young people in situations of forced migration based on some of the experiences of young people we have worked with in the five case study countries.
Both panels led to interesting and rich discussions which allowed us to share our research experiences and findings and also to learn from others involved in similar research.
