Workshop at the African Centre for Migration and Society (ACMS), University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg
20 May 2026
The GRABS team was invited to participate in a day long workshop at the African Centre for Migration and Society (ACMS), at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg
We were delighted to engage with colleagues from the GEMMS and Nurture4Youth (N4Y) research programmes at ACMS to discuss the ways in which our respective projects engage with young people on the move, the initial findings of each project, and pathways for future collaboration.
The workshop created a shared space for the GRABS team to engage with researchers working on issues of youth, migration, mobility, health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, gendered violence, and participatory research methods. We were able to identify common themes and practical opportunities for collaboration. Key themes included mobility and immobility, access to services, documentation and bureaucratic exclusion, the use of participatory and creative methods, ethics and care in research. We also had a very interesting discussion on ways of research having impact and translating into public, policy and community-facing outputs.
We would like to thank all our colleagues at ACMS for the warm welcome and inspiring discussions which we hope will lead to long term collaboration.
